Men and Christianity - Russell Powell

I have a deep and abiding interest in issues concerning men and Christianity. Over the coming months this part of Manhood online will tackle a range of issues that particularly affect men with regard to their Christian life.

 Topics will include:

    •  Jesus – sensitive new age guy or hellfire preacher?
    • Where are the men in churches today?
    • Jesus and the men's movement
    • Task-oriented men: is there more to life?
    • Trends in Christian men's work

Russell is one of Australia's leading radio journalists. He has worked in the media for 20 years as a journalist, commentator, news director, news presenter and writer.

He spend the 1980s at leading Sydney talk stations 2UE and 2GB, where he variously presented breakfast or afternoon news broadcasts, serving as news editor at 2UE and news director at 2GB and the Macquarie Network.

Russell is currently breakfast presenter on the ABC national all-news station NewsRadio, the first all-news format in the country. It is heard in all capital cities except Darwin. He also lectures on journalism and radio presentation.

Russell became a Christian in 1981. He speaks regularly to Christian men's groups and also writes articles in Christian publications, such as The Briefing. He serves on the committee organising the first Men's Katoomba Convention, to be held in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney in February 1997. He is also a director of the Media Bible Fellowship, a group dedicated to Christian work in the media.

He and his wife Robyn have four children ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old.
